Who's the Boss of your Mind?

H O L Y C O W –

I just have to share what happened and tell you why it’s critical to your health and your happiness to learn mindfulness strategies.

Here’s what happened:

You all know I’m moving to Michigan and trying to sell my home. I got a last minute text from my realtor at 7:35 am that she wanted to show my house at 10:30. I had a hard to get and long overdue hair appointment at 9:30. I know you know – if you’ve ever tried to sell your house, when the realtor calls – YOU BETTER BE READY.

The sirens in my head went off when I got that message. All the stressful thoughts about selling the house sent my heart racing. I knew I had to move fast to clean every room to picture perfect – GIANT UGH. In that very moment, when it felt like a tornado was whipping up inside of me – I stopped and told myself –

“I hate this familiar stressful feeling AND I really don’t want to feel it right now.” In that moment I reminded myself that I have choice in how this frantic episode could go.

I put my phone down and got to work. I began with the kitchen, focusing on my hands wiping down the countertops, appliances, cabinets. Noticing every little thing about each item I was cleaning.

I will not kid you – my monkey mind wanted to shift focus to a million other things. . .

Like what I needed to clean in the next room, and the quote I wanted to post on Instagram and the garbage that needed to go out…

Thinking about all the things that would take me out of the present moment of cleaning the kitchen and into panic mode.

BUT I KEPT CONSCIOUSLY BRINGING MY THOUGHTS BACK TO THE MOMENT OF WHAT I WAS DOING.

OH EM GEE – not gonna lie…

T H I S W A S R E A L L Y H A R D.

. . . BUT SO WORTH IT.

Because then a interesting thing happened.

My heartbeat slowed down. That rushed anxiety feeling went away. It was as if time stood still. I finished cleaning the house without feeling out of breath like I’d just ran a marathon.

Did I get to the hair appointment on time?

NO.

But guess what?

Unlike every other time I’ve run late and arrived completely FRAZZLED – this time I arrived late with a total sense of CALM.

THIS WAS THE BEST FEELING E V E R.

And proof again that how I manage my mind determines how I feel and behave.

Do you experience that same stressful anxiety feeling when you’re pressured to get something done?

Do you start to become a victim of time and run around like a chicken with your head cut off?

Do you forget that YOU ARE THE BOSS of your mind and your minutes and you have choice in what you’re thinking about, what you are focusing on and ultimately how you are feeling?

Here’s a reminder:

YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOU.

YOU GET TO CHOOSE HOW YOU WALK, RUN OR SPRINT THROUGH LIFE.

YOU GET TO DECIDE IF YOU WANT TO BE A SLAVE TO THE CLOCK OR THE MASTER OF IT.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, Stopping and becoming mindful of what you are thinking in that moment is available to you 24/7

…and with that so is your peace of mind.
